It seems to be never-ending...

I've not been the most regular at updating this blog so far, and I attribute that to a few things:

1.  It is really hard to open up and spill your guts...to anyone.  I've actually begun to let my guard down in my personal life in regards to these issues lately, and my mom has once again become my #1 confidante for everything that is going a bit wacky right now with Mike.

2.  There are some days that I've wanted to write, but I don't think I have the emotional capacity to relive the issues that have newly arisen.  Sometimes I just want to block them out of my mind and try to move forward.

3.  Mike and I live together.  It's sometimes hard to get some "me" time without getting interrupted or him asking me what I'm up to.

The last week and a half have been such a roller coaster.  I had my weekly therapy appointment last Tuesday, and after diving into a somewhat uneventful week, I disclosed to my therapist that Mike's panic attacks and night terrors seem to be growing worse and more frequent.  She made it clear that Mike needs to see a psychiatrist to make sure that his anti-anxiety meds are at the right dosage and that he needs to see a therapist.  He needs to work through whatever it is in his subconscious that is preventing him from having positive and healthy days, and in my opinion, he needs to do it fast.  Each day that he is putting it off is making being in this relationship that much more painful for me.  And it shouldn't be that way.

My therapist was kind enough to spend half an hour printing out doctors in our area that take his insurance.  She went through each one, telling me what their strengths were and making note of whether or not she would recommend Mike going to them.  I brought the papers home eight days ago, and Mike has not touched them.

The night that I brought the papers home, I went to bed early, and Mike stayed up watching television in the living room.  I popped awake around midnight and came out to see that he was still on the couch watching tv.  He had his phone in his hand and was typing something.  I leaned down to give him a hug and kiss, and my eye was caught by X's last name being on his texting screen.  It turned out it wasn't X, but was her younger sister, and he had started texting with her because he was sad.  I asked him about it, and he got defensive saying that he knew I wouldn't be able to not be nosey about his speaking with her.

I was awake all night, upset.  We had discussed his maintaining a friendship with X's sister, and I had no problem with that.  However, I do take issue with him reaching out to her when he is in a low emotional state and is needing to seek comfort.  Going to X's family or friends when he needs to be comforted is a slap in the face to me.

The next morning, I had to go into work early, but I refused to grapple with the feelings that I was having for the entirety of the day.  I asked him to wake up a few minutes before he needed to so that we could talk.  I told him that I would not stay in a relationship with someone who has one foot in his past still.  I deserve both feet, dammit, and if he is unable to plant both feet firmly in front of me, that I would painfully have to step away.

The day was filled with him calling me, starting an argument or a question, and then him hanging up on me.  I knew he was replacing what would normally be an anxiety attack with allowing himself to just be angry, so I let him.  I didn't know what else to do.

Long story made short, we were able to make up that afternoon, and he came home that night.  Things throughout the weekend seemed to be completely focused on the preparation for Irene hitting us here in Connecticut, so I think that's really what allowed for a peaceful weekend relationship-wise.

At some point Sunday night, in his sleep, he asked me why I can't just let him be happy.  He didn't remember saying this, come morning time.

Last night, Mike got a call from his old boss in Syracuse, New York, basically offering him a job.  She loves Mike and wants him back on her team up in Syracuse, and last night, the position she dangled was actually a step up from his position now.  We've discussed multiple times that he could go back to Syracuse with a job if he was so inclined, but it's always come down to me not having work opportunity in Syracuse, and also the fact that I do not care to live in Syracuse...it is a very small town that has terrible snow seven months of the year.  That is not my idea of a good place to live.

So when Mike brought it up to me again last night, I truly thought that since we'd had this discussion probably six other times, that he knew where I stood on the idea of relocating to Syracuse.  Apparently he didn't know, so I had to go through my list of reasons once more for why I do not want to live in Syracuse, and also for why I do not want to leave my great job right now.  He stood up and as he was walking out of the room said to me, "There are only so many opportunities that I can let pass me up, you know."  Whaaaat is that supposed to mean?!

This sparked an argument, with him saying that I've been angry and sad all day (in no way was I angry or sad prior to this conversation, although I did spend the entire fielding the "are you okay?" questions from him, when I had given him absolutely no reason to even question if I was not okay), and that our relationship has some very serious issues right now.

A friend of ours is staying with us still due to his building being out of power because of the storm, so about that time, he got to our apartment, and our discussion had to cease.

Last night, I woke up to Mike having night terrors again, tossing and turning, and saying "I hate myself" in his sleep.  It just keeps getting worse.

He called me this morning when he got to the office, and with excitement in his voice, he said: "There are two jobs that have opened up with my company in Raleigh!"  I was a bit stunned after our discussion last night about Syracuse that he was putting another relocation opportunity on the table.  Again, he got frustrated at me when I said that moving at the moment is not something that I am wanting to do.

I told him today that I am worried about him.  Worried about his anxiety, his night terrors, his unhappiness, and his comments about not liking himself.  I asked him if he had looked into the therapists at all, and he quickly and flippantly answered "nope".  And then he "had to go" because he was at work.  He's on the way home soon because he has a work-from-home afternoon, and I am actually dreading him coming home, because I know it is going to turn into a fight...another unnecessary fight.

I think it's almost time for me to admit that I'm on a sinking ship.  I love him though, which makes that something that is truly difficult to type, much less say out loud.

Here we go, ladies...  As always, I appreciate any thoughts, comments, or words of wisdom.

Therapy.

I just returned from my second therapy session, and I actually feel lighter.  Clearer.  Validated, even, I guess.

As I walked over to the therapist's office, I was thinking to myself: "Yanno, I don't know if I need this...", but I have to tell you that the hour flew by, and I actually feel lucky to have stumbled upon such a kind-hearted and wise woman to bounce my thoughts and feelings off of.

In my session last week, we honed in on why I have a tendency to cut people out of my life, and whether or not it is truly a healthy practice.

This week, we focused on whether or not I feel that Mike has both feet in our relationship, and how I would feel differently if I truly thought that his feet were entirely in.  (For the record, I think he is 97%.  And for the record, I know that that is not the number it should be.)  We dove into Mike's anxiety issues and she explained how his guilt of hurting someone, anyone, not just X, controls his actions on many occasions, as a means to fend off any sort of panic or anxiety that could come as a result of conflict.  His guilt and anxiety for hurting X is in turn hurting me and causing anxiety.  Such a paradox.  But such a relief to hear it from someone other than myself so that I can stop thinking that I just might be crazy.  Wow.

Have any of you had experiences with a therapist like this?  Where they completely help make you feel enlightened in regards to a situation that you've been analyzing and staring at for months?  It is such an interesting feeling to me right now.

The rest of the story.

Ladies, thank you so much for your super sweet emails and comments already today.  You have begun instantly to make me feel comfortable in sharing these thoughts with you, knowing that so many of you have experiences that are similar or that you can draw from to know how I am feeling.

Now, for how it has all turned out...

X returned from her out-of-the-country trip, as scheduled, and began messaging + calling MPD at once.  I knew she was reaching out to him - he told me - but he kept putting off answering her or writing back to her texts.  Finally, last Wednesday, he asked if he could call her that coming Friday.  He mentioned this to me, and I don't know what happened - what clicked in my head, and what didn't - but I lost it.

It had been a full year that this person had been reeking havoc on our relationship.  A full year since she'd started making her underhanded and sly comments to try to get into his head and under my skin.  A full year since her actions had begun causing upset between MPD + me.  I couldn't take another two days, simply because he was scared or nervous to speak with her and hurt her feelings.  My feelings were hurt, dammit, and mine were meant come first.

I wish I'd gone about voicing these thoughts and emotions in a kinder way, but as it happens when you hold feelings inside for too long, I burst.  I spat my words, I raised my voice, I called him a coward for not protecting me, and us, from the beginning from this girl, naive as she may be or not.  (I firmly believe she is not, he firmly believes that she is.  Another matter we cannot meet in the middle on.)  Wow, I was mean.  I told him that finding the ability to forgive him for allowing me and us to be hurt had evaded me thus far, and that I was really struggling with simply not being angry with him.  He told me I was vicious and that he was seeing a side of me that was full of anger that he had never seen in me before.

Back and forth, the evening went on with us both trying to voice our feelings, both of us trying to have our feelings heard.  We did make progress (this situation notwithstanding, we actually do communicate with each other super well), and we eventually called the evening quits.  ...But not before I eventually agreed to see a therapist for my inability to forgive and move past the fact that I've been hurt.

The week ended with MPD calling X, and I don't know the details of it all, but she finally understands that she is no longer able to be a friend of his.  No phone calls, messages, or any form of communication has been attempted as of yet - thank goodness.

However, things are different right now with MPD + me.  I'm not the sweet, ever-loving girl that he's known since the day we met anymore.  He's seen a part of me that he apparently didn't want to see.  Walking away isn't an option for us, and we both feel that way.  We love each other way too much, and we do know that this too shall pass.  But I've been thrown off ever since last week, trying to sort out who I am versus who I see myself as.  Trying to figure out what is wrong with me that I can be so easily angered and have such trouble in being able to dole out forgiveness to anyone who has harmed me.  I keep coming back around to the fact that I feel completely justified in my anger, which can't be the healthy answer here - not when more than one person is involved.  Which is why I don't think that an outside perspective would be harmful, and which is why I have booked my first visit with a therapist for tomorrow morning.

Have any of you seen a therapist before?  Did you feel that it helped you in any way?
  I'd love your feedback.

Getting real.

Writing has been so difficult for me lately.  Normally, it's something that I love, that allows me to get my creativity flowing and put some beauty out into the (blogging) world.

I've found myself struggling as of late, to find some source of inspiration in getting words to move from my head to the keyboard to the screen.  After spending a week or so mulling over how I can break this writer's block, I decided I needed to just sit down and start writing, and maybe dive into the center of it all and what is holding me back.

A need for a new blogging home might be the first step.  A place that the folks that are involved my every day "real life" are not aware of, so that I can release my thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment or upset.  Thank you, ladies, for visiting me here, and please know that I welcome with open ears any and all advice and wisdom you have to share with me.

So, I'm ready to begin today, by diving into the center of what is on my forefront of my mind in the here and now.  It's somewhat of a lengthy story, so I will write it in two parts.

***

I'm in a rough spot right now.  My relationship with MPD is off-kilter at the moment, due to actions on both of our parts.  Tried as we might, we have been unable to see eye-to-eye for the past year on a certain situation involving an ex-love (of his), and as things always do, it has finally hit the fan.  You see, MPD forgives endlessly.  And I...well, I do not.

When a negative influence becomes apparent in my life, I walk away.  I don't look back, and I continue on with my life without said negativity.  MPD, on the other hand, forgives, forgives, and forgives some more.  He believes that the good in a person will always one day prevail, and that even if the action of someone is hurtful, that if their intentions were naive enough, they should not hold the blame for the pain caused.  You can see where this could potentially cause issues between us.

Enter MPD's ex-girlfriend, with whom he has maintained a steady friendship since they broke up two years ago.  From the fledgling of our relationship, she (we shall just call her X for blogging purposes) voiced opinions of MPD's dog being "her's" (completely unbiased, as MPD purchased and raised this pup solo) and that she couldn't stand that I was around "her" dog.  She raised objections to him beginning to date me, because she "always envisioned them getting back together one day."  (She broke up with him, for the record.)  X eventually stated that she needed distance and time to accept our relationship, as she was hurt by him moving on.

For every woman reading this, I'm sure you could just picture the steam shooting out of my ears at the situation not being halted once and for all, right there.

Months of silence were put between them, in my efforts to compromise with MPD on not cutting her out of his life completely.  "She is hurting, and she has voiced that she regrets saying those things and really does wish us the best," became the statement that I had to argue with repeatedly.  Finally, in the early Spring of this year, I threw my hands up and agreed that we could begin to move forward with him speaking to her once more.  (Gosh, as I type this, I have to ask...do I sound like as much of an idiot as I feel that I have been?)

Months went on with all going well, X even reaching out to be friendly with me, friending me on Facebook, and feigning interest in knowing me.  It didn't take long, of course, for her to once again cross that line, and voice an inappropriate-something regarding a loving statement MPD had made toward me, being something that he had re-voiced from the days that he dated her.

I was infuriated and elated, all at the same time.  She'd crossed the line again, which made me seethe with upset, yet...she'd crossed the line again, which gave me the footing I needed to firmly stand in front of MPD and object to her being any part of our lives moving forward.  Even though I felt confident in my reasoning and my feelings, I was still a bit shocked when MPD agreed with me, finally.

He said that he would put an end to it, even though he still truly believed that she meant no harm in her words.  X was leaving for an out-of-the-country trip the next day, so he decided to wait until her return to speak with her.  Finally having MPD on my wavelength, I did not object, and I sat back to enjoy the week and a half that I knew X would not be attempting contact with MPD, knowing that it would be a really fun and light-hearted week, just how it was anytime she was removed from our day-to-day lives.
